This is a puriri tree from Mander Park and was donated to us by the NewZealand Transport Agency. It is a seedling from one of the trees that will be removed and replaced further back in the park to make way for the widening of State Highway 1.
We are still thinking about where we are going to put Pukana [the tree's name] because in 100 years time it will be 20 meters tall.

The widening of the road has caused all sorts of reactions - some people want it to happen so the traffic flow will improve and make using that piece of road better for motorists. Other people are really upset because Mander Park and the trees planted there have been there for a long time and were given to the people of Whangarei as a recreational area.
We do know that NZTA are planting tree for tree and planting native trees. But it shows that sometimes progress doesn't make everyone happy. Mrs Hepi remembers 'coming to town' (she lived in the country and there were no swings out there) to play on the swings at Mander Park when she was little. It will be interesting to see how many of us remember how the park is now when we get older.
You have made some insightful comments girls. Well done.
