Tower Building Challenge

Tower Building Challenge - Version One

We had to work in small groups to build a tower with only two sheets of newspaper (broad sheet size). Our brief was to build the tallest tower with our newspaper which also had to stay standing for at least 30 seconds. We only had 20 minutes to design and build our tower. Each group used different ways to build their tower and the heights ranged from 16 cm to 94.8cm.

the biggest problem we encountered was getting the towers to stand up. We had to design and modify throughout the process as we figured out what would work and what wouldn't. Some of us didn't manage to get out tower finished.

Tower Building Challenge - Version Two

This time we had prior knowledge and we all got our towers to stand up for the minimum amount of time, and the towers were bigger than Version 1. The big difference that Mrs Hepi notices was the way were talking during the design process. WE were saying things like, "We know that ... so we should be able to...? and I think s... so..."

Tower Building Challenge - Version Three

This time the brief was still the same but we were now allowed 1 metre of sticky tape as well. Having a new material made us change out designs radically and interestingly, not always for the better. The groups who tried to use the tape to fix their tower to the floor, although making their tower really tall, had trouble getting them to stand up. What we learned was that the principle of having a wider base and narrower top still applied. Tayla created the tallest tower this time and she didn't even use her tape.  Her tower also stood independently for several day
