Taonga Reading

These are some of the stories we read to help us understand what a taonga is.  Taniwha by Robyn Kahukiwa shows that not all people know what is taonga is.  It also tells us that we can learn so much from our cultural stories, and our elders.

Present from the Past by Jennifer Beck is a lovely story about a chocolate tin that was more than a tin.  The tin had a story and it connected a family with their ancestor and their family history.
The article 'Not Just a House' by Materoa Tangaere illustrated how cultural beliefs influence what is valued as taonga.  This article explains how that wharenui is more than a building, that it is an ancestor.  Parts of the building are described as a person.  Click on the pictures to find out more.
