The Bikes in Schools programme has been designed to encourage children to get outside on their bikes and to be able to ride safely. All our helmets have been adjust to fit us correctly and we have been taught how to check our bikes using the M check - starting at the front wheel, up to the handle bars, down to the pedals, back up to the seat and back down to the back wheel. We have learned how to ride around the track using our 'track manners' - keep to the left and signal (bell and voice) that you are going to overtake. Our first lesson also included learning how to brake safely, and how ride safely with one hand on the handle bars.
Lesson Two - we learned how to take tight corners following a specific course. When cornering, you need to have the peddle closest to the corner in the 'up' position and coast around the corner. We also learned to play a game called 'Foot Down'. This was really good fun and helped us to develop our control of the bike. Basically, we were all riding in a small area and had to avoid putting our foot down. If you put your foot down, you are out. As people get out, the space available to ride in gets smaller and smaller. Great fun.
Lesson Three - We learned how to make signalled turns. We had to put all the skills together - riding with one hand, looking over your shoulder, turning, keeping left and riding in a straight line when needed.

I love watching you all riding your bikes around our new track safely. It helps to keep you healthy. Well done.
