The Fish of Maui by Peter Gossage
The story of how Maui fished up the North Island of New Zealand (Te Ika a Maui) when he sneaks onto his brothers canoe after they have refused to take him fishing.
Mrs Smith used this story to inspire us to create our Maui artwork. This time we used black line, crayon resist and dye to accentuate our designs.
The story is important too, because it helps us understand how important the land is to Maori. Many of the myths and legends passed down the generations are about how the land came to be as it is and who is connected to that land. Being connected to the land is an important part of Turanagawaewae.
