Mrs Hepi's classes over the years and been making lolly leis for the annual St Francis Xavier Catholic School gala and this year was no exception. Along with Mrs Gunson's class we made about 300 lolly leis using harakeke or flax. We meet in Room 20 and with the help of Mrs Adams and Mrs Thornton (two hardworking gala team members) we got to work. Basically, we tied 10 lollies with thin strips of flax to a prepared flax necklace. We have to work with green flax as it is easier and over the following days the flax dries out. When we first made lolly leis we used glad wrap. But as we are an Silver Enviro School this did not fit with being environmentally aware. So Mrs Adam came up with the idea to use harakeke a few years ago. So the children in Room 20 and Room 16 can be proud that they helped contribute to the school gala but also helped make a product that would not impact on the environment.
The gala is a huge part of our school story and school culture. It has been running for many years with the help of our parents. It is a vital fundraising event that the PTFA can then use to help us during our time at this school.
